  • SATA and SAS are two technologies computers use to transfer data between the motherboard and storage. Although they do the exact same thing, each technology is made with different hardware.

    4. PARALLEL VS. SERIAL COMMUNICATION

    Serial communication is used by SAS and SATA. Serial communication refers to the highway having both northbound- and southbound lanes (or eastbound and westbound).

    • Data can be transferred from the motherboard to storage.
    • Data can be moved from storage to the motherboard.

    Parallel communication was replaced by serial communication. This is no longer possible in modern computers. Parallel communication was a way to transmit incoming and outgoing data through separate cables. Imagine two highways with one northbound lane and one southbound lane. The highways are located one mile apart.

    Parallel communication had the advantage of allowing more traffic to be handled at once, with each highway having a larger number of lanes. It had its problems.

    • They were very large.
    • Multiple cables took up much space in the computer.
