Primavera P6 Progress Update in Steps

  • When it comes to planning and managing major projects, Primavera P6 is the industry standard. During the scheduling phase, a prominent question is how to build up an initial baseline schedule in P6. Although it seems to be a less popular topic, the monitoring and control phase is just as crucial as the implementation phase.

We'll walk you through the suggested process for adding progress to your plan:

    Assign a Baseline

A baseline is necessary as a point of reference for your project in order to track the performance of your timetable. Before making any adjustments, it would be wise to use the present timetable as a baseline. You have two options for setting the baseline:

Project Baseline: The formal project schedule that was authorised and accepted by the customer is this baseline. The baseline for the project is a set of rules that can only be altered via change control. This kind of timeline shouldn't limit any advancement.

User Baseline: These are unofficial baselines that users might establish to monitor performance as a project moves forward. These are frequently momentary glimpses of the project, like a prior progress report.

    Collect Progress Input

The next step is to gather and enter progress in the tool. The secret to success in this situation is a well-documented input data sheet. Gather all the information you need on the scheduled activities up until the deadline date and time. Do you have a progress report that includes Friday? So, Saturday at 0:00 should be your Data Date.

    Enter the Progress

Now that the previous phase has been completed, the progression may be directly applied in P6 in the same manner as the previous table: Activity Status, Dates, Physical Percent Complete/Units/Costs/Expenses (if appropriate). Your schedule may not yet appear to be accurate since the durations and dates don't seem to match the input, the connections aren't respected, etc. This is usual at this point, so don't be alarmed. By setting your appointments too soon, try not to worry.
