Toyota Tacoma manual transmitting pop out of gear
If you have a Toyota truck with a manual transmission with a lot of miles on it, There's a strong possibility that you suffer from a common problem that these trucks have. Gears that take off of gear while driving.
Apple 1996 Tacoma that I bought new. In the all of the intervening time, I've put nearby 220,000 miles on. Around 4 5 common, 1st and second gear began popping out even during warm up. Pull up on the boot to get it out of the way to get at the shift lever retainer cap. There is a rubber dust cover ostentatious that easily pops off.
I just finished following these rules and the out come is awesome. One hint that will save you time is to notice in step 2 the shift lever is centered with the spring housing. The housing only clears the ball on the tip of the shift lever by.001" Per element. The fact the my lever seat was completely worn away caused the ball to be out of allignment with the cup. While pressing down on the spring housing move the lever slightly in the heart of the cup and when the mating parts line up the spring housing will compress easily.
Know: Shift lever retainer cap = spring house.

First, I received my parts from from Redlands Toyota in Redlands, California($19.50). The grinding/hard breaking into 4th and the popping out of 5th gear started a week ago.
Anyway, My first night's attempt was an inability. After 1 hour of messing with it with hammer, Needlenose pliers, Screwdrivers, Shoving down on it,

I then tried again up coming night. Somehow eventually, I somehow tapped it with a hammer and piece of wood affordable on the cap. It did actually move down 2 3mm. I believed that was progress Then I hit the cap with the stick of wood and a hammer again at an 30 degree angle at the"4 o-clock" Position counterclockwise and what have you any idea it started moving. Following minute, The cap could be off!
Hope could others in need(If other treatments failed). I think the squirting of WD 40, Petrol, Tapping it down and then from and angle helped loosened it up.
Once I got them back, I carefully put a wipe down the hole so no pieces of broken plastic would fall into the tranny? I used my shop vac to suck all the tiny pieces and be able to greased the new washer and ball of the shifter and reinstalled. Now my shifting is practically new.

The spring pushing up on the cap ceases to push down evenly. Access to the cap is from front side side and pushing down on the cap in entry makes the spring push the cap up on the back. I attempted to reposition the spring, But the rubbing was too great. After trying kinds methods and tools suggested above, I thought we would make a tool.
I took a short amount of 1x1 square steel tube. I cut a notch about 1/4 deep and about 5/8 inch long on one side, Then made two parallel cuts following the edge, Just within the inner wall of the tube. Use a set of pliers to work the tongue between the two until it breaks. File the sides smooth.
This tool squeezes the inner spring while pushing down on the cap. I used a visegrip to show while I pushed down. You must put it into neutral( Vehicle automobile brake please.) So that you can do this. You just need to a hacksaw and a file to clean up the edges. It took about 5 minutes to makes tool.
Whether you have a center console, I put photos of the positioning of the screws and bolts. I included as well a photo of some useful things: A magnetic tray to put screws in and a type of screwdriver that holds the screw on the screwdriver. Nice things if you have them and inexpensive allow me to explain.

I just obtained a 1989 toyota deluxe truck, It was poping out of equipment, And would not go into third, I got it home actually got a new new clutch kit 100 dollars, And called many shops in order to all wanted 400 600 no parts. So I was gonna tackle it myself and before doing suspected id read up more into it, And found out about this site, I thought for 20 dollars how could i not try it since it was doing the majority of said on here, Went down to toyota dealer bought the two pieces 19.75, And it jump in it, After getting the arm lever out i ran across the old gasket was non existent, Only the ruber gasket at the base was left, Put it together again and i was surprised ans all heck, It fricken been successful, It adjustments like a new truck now. Awesome. Just fricken exceptional. I appreciate post and info. Im quite in shock.
My 1994 Toyota P/U ended letting me shift into 4th gear. I was motoring around without 4th, But then 3rd gear in order to give me a similar issue. Got 282K 'PROUD' cientos on 'her'. My mechanic ignored my problem and told me to get a new car. Met this guy at a party who told me to determine the seat/gasket in the gear shift. Then found your site from Google and with photos and the good explanations, I was able to fully remove the 'remnants' of the seat where I found the gasket that still remained. By the way, Removing the shift lever cap was the challenging part of this entire process. Used 2 small square 1/4 inch stick bits of wood cut from a floor board of new oak. Pushed down and then left on the 2 corners inside the cap. Pay attention to: When I attended the Toyota parts desk, The guy told me I'd have to buy all gear shift for about $200, That they did not carry that part. Decided on the service desk there instead and got the part number. It's name is a"Sitting Sub Assy, Part cell numbers 33505 35020. Outgoings $18. Wanted help. Hope this assists someone too!Does anyone know if the rubber seal is still needed when replacement the shift lever seat with a marlin after market one. I tore my truck apart and the old seat contained about 10 flakes the size of cake sprinkles. I cleaned it all up and put in the new marlin seat inherent seal, It helped a bit and the truck does not pop out of first as much but still does generally. I tried to re install the marlin seat with the old seal in place and can't get the cap to twist on. Do I only need to try harder or is the after market seat not designed to use a seal?
I had the pop out of some gears problem and hard to shift some grinding at times issue recently with my 1994 Toyota 2WD standard bed pickup.
Followed the guidelines here and was able to open up the shift lever and sure enough the old green shift seat was almost dissolved into little green bits and goo. Cleaned it all out and substituted for the more durable Marlin Crawler version(Uses the white-colored one) And put it together again today. Now it shifts like new again in all gears nice solid. Cost me about $30 total throughout the high FedEx shipping they use,
