Most internet users know what a meme is. The widely circulated pictures, often with captions, can be used in humorous, intelligent or downright offensive ways.
The media has been steadfast in picking up on this phenomenon. In America, Polymic picked up onmemes created and distributed by social media users to voice their views throughout the Presidential election.
Memes evidently have the potential to provoke interesting and important debate on a variety of topics. So why aren we harnessing that potential?
One of the most circulated Tony Abbott memes. It may only have 450+ likes, but the Huffington Post has already picked up on it as one of sites you should be wasting your time on. The page is a spinoff the widely popular Hey Girl, Ryan Gosling memes that have been circulating for 4 years. The memes were originally created to be cute and witty a fantasy for girls everywhere crushing on the hollywood heartthrob.
The creators of the Abbott spinoff are definitely not romanticising over the Opposition leader. These memes have been created for one reason: to demean Abbott and his party in the eyes of social media. I don support Tony Abbott, so why do I have a problem with this page? Because we better than that.
While I am all for scrutinising those in power and am in no way against caricatures and memes that satirise policies which can have dangerous repercussions on us as a society, I am against personal attacks that, in my opinion,

In the same way that there has been an uproar when the PM has been reduced to nothing more than her gender, I believe we should be offended and repulsed by memes that normalise a bullying attitude towards the purportedly sexist Opposition leader.
