Mike Pompeo did not name the Chinese officials affected by the US visa restrictions
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says Washington is setting visa restrictions for Chinese Communist Party officials who believe they are responsible for the destruction of freedom in Hong Kong.
Pompeii said sanctions are targeting current and past party officials.
He said the move was in line with President Donald Trump's promise to punish Beijing according to the proposed security law that could overrule Hong Kong's independence.
China said that the decision of the United States is "Mistakes" that should be withdrawn
It came a few days before the Chinese parliament meeting.
The National People's Congress will discuss new laws at the meeting, which will begin on Sunday.
China has proposed security laws that would be crimes to undermine Beijing's power in Hong Kong and may see that China installed its own security agencies for the first time.
The movement sparked a new wave of protests against the mainland in Hong Kong.
Pompeii's statement on Friday did not specify the names of Chinese officials affected by US visa restrictions, according to a recent vote by the United States Senate, to impose sanctions on persons who undermine Hong Kong's independence.
In response to the Chinese embassy movement in Washington said "Firmly opposed to the wrong decisions of the United States"
In a statement posted on Twitter, the embassy added: "We call on the United States to correct the mistake immediately, cancel the decision and stop intervening in China's domestic affairs."
Last month, Trump also said that he would begin to terminate Hong Kong's special privileges for trade and tourism as planned.
The US president said Beijing is about to change. "One Country, Two Systems, One Country, One System Contract Formulas"
"This is a tragedy for Hong Kong ... China freed Hong Kong's freedom," he added.
The Chinese parliament has supported the vote for the new law, which is now passed to the country's senior leaders.
Hong Kong has always had security laws. But cannot pass because it is not popular
Now China is stepping up to make sure that the city has a certain legal framework to deal with what it sees as a serious challenge to the authorities.
The law will make criminals commit any of:
- Secession from China
- Subversion - undermine the power or authority of the central government
- Terrorism - Violence or intimidation
- Activities of foreign forces intervening in Hong Kong
Experts say they fear that the law will see people punished by criticizing Beijing - just as it happened in mainland China.
