Students in Londonderry are helping to solve the mystery of the slotxo ออโต้ Air Force's World War II plane crash that occurred nearly 80 years ago.Foyle College pupils and aeronautical archaeologists unearthed the fragments of the Bristol Beaufort plane on Saturday.The plane crashed outside Ballykelly, County Londonderry on April 30, 1942, killing three crew members.They include Flt Lt Richard Holdsworth, 31, Flt Sgt Stanley Chadwick and Flt Lt Duncan Livingstone, all 22.The crew takes part in parachuting training.Those involved in a mining plan to raise funds for a man's memorial The Foyle College aviation team also plans to organize a memorial service for men and travel to the RAF Museum in London to meet with crew relatives.
The excavation was commissioned by the Department of Defense and the Department for Communities (DfC) Historic Environment Division and was filmed in th Digging for Britain archaeological series.Using state-of-the-art survey and detection equipment, the team spent nearly 18 months finding the site and obtaining the relevant permissions.Only last summer the exact point of the plane was finally found, with preliminary evidence suggesting that the collision in an adjacent field was found.Digging organizer Jonny McNeill said the discovery would help unravel the 80-year-old puzzle together."It helped ease the great anxiety the family had over the past 80 years," explains McNeil.It also tells us of the tragically painful condition that we found it was burnt and shattered, what happened on that fateful day when the plane crashed.
