Brazil's Ministry of Tourism is undertaking 1.6 thousand projects for the 2014 World Cup and 900 of them are well on their way. The ministry has allocated 79.6% of this year’s budget for the interventions, which corresponds to R$ 2.15 billion

“By supplying the tourism sector with opportunities to develop, we take social inclusion and generate employment for the whole country”, stated Minister of Tourism Gastão Vieira. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), tourism related activities generated 2.9 million jobs in 2012.

In total, the Ministry of Tourism is involved in 5,163 projects. Among these, the paving or motorways, tourist signs and the building of convention centres stand out. “They are interventions that improve infrastructure not just for visitors, but also for local residents", said the National Secretary of Tourism Development Programmes Fabio Mota.

São Paulo is the city with the biggest number of projects on the way (724) and the state with the biggest amount of resources allocated by the Ministry of Tourism (R$ 563.7 million). The state of Ceará comes in second, with investments of R$ 273.4 million in 398 projects. In relation to the efficiency of project delivery, the state of Mato Grosso shows the best performance levels, with all of its 167 interventions on schedule.

According to the last Annual Survey on the Economic Situation of Tourism, commissioned by the ministry and conducted by the Getulio Vargas Foundation, the 80 biggest groups in the sector had revenues of R$ 57.6 billion and generated 115 thousand jobs last year.  “By investing in tourism, the country helps to drive an important sector for the economy, which generates a lot of jobs and grows more than the GDP”, said the minister.

Professional qualification is another important aspect for the development of the tourism sector. PRONATEC Tourism will offer over 200 thousand vacancies in training courses until the 2014 World Cup.
