Being a college freshman, I have realized only recently that world economy plays a significant role in our daily life. Therefore, knowledge of the principles and rules of economic organization is a key to understanding most important issues that predetermine people’s lives and, at the same time, is a powerful tool of influence that allows shaping them. My background is also an important factor that evoked my interest in economy: being a son of a real estate company owner in Beijing, I have been interested in economy since childhood. I was never forced into economy, but rather it was my own choice and inclination.
It was my father who exemplified an image of a successful economist for me; no doubt that I chose to follow in his footsteps, although find my own way in economic studies, as it was mentioned in many informal essay examples. I remember my first attempt to apply my interest in economy in practice. Once an idea of organizing a theme hotel came to my mind; having discussed it with my father who was very pragmatic and showing him a business plan of my project, I realized that I was crucially lacking knowledge both in business and economy. That event was a cornerstone that signaled the need for a profound academic training for me.
The above-mentioned factors outline my major field of interest: mastery of economic theory and the way it influences wellbeing of modern families and stability in the market. My dream is that my family lives in a stable and developing economic environment. However, I feel that I can get that high level of knowledge only at University; that is why my earnest intention is to transfer to University and benefit from being able to acquire knowledge and skills in economic theory that would be valuable for my future career and enable to meet my personal expectations. My studies are an important possibility to prove my family that I will be able to become an honored member of society by achieving an outstanding professional in the field of my specialization.
This is not the first time that I think about transferring to university; yet I realize that my previous attempts would be premature due to lack of life experience and knowledge. However, now I am sure that I will be able to fit into a dense academic curriculum at University. I feel that I can be an excellent student due to my independence and self-reliance that I acquired during the years of my studying at high school as I had to move to the USA and earn for my living since I turned thirteen. It was at high school that I started to realize my interest in economy: I was the head of a business club that provided opportunities for individuals and group learning of world economy and stock market. I believe that one of my greatest achievements is absence of stage fright: thus, for example, I was responsible for giving a speech devoted to Thanksgiving Day before the whole school. I am certain that this experience will be especially useful for my studies at University. My stable GPA (3.87) allowed me to be included in the Autumn Dean’s Honor List in 2013. In my further academic advancement, I am interested in engaging in economic research; though, this activity is new for me, I would like to try myself as a researcher.
During my previous studies, I used every summer as an opportunity to engage in voluntary work. Thus, I volunteered as a narrator in Beijing Anti-Drug Education Exhibition hall, participated in the 3rd Beijing Olympic city sports and culture festival, was a leader at the summer camp of Sichan Hope primary school. I was shocked to know that Sichan Hope primary school camp was destroyed by earthquake in 2008; so, my first desire was to restore it with its strong spirit of community and honor. At that time, I had only vague idea about how this could be achieved; so it became a trigger for me to realize how crucial economic knowledge was. During my senior year of studies, I had to fly internally and witnessed all the inconveniences of Beijing airport: hundreds of people enclosed in a small area; scarcity of opportunities for accommodation, etc. Having some time before flight, an idea of building a cheap express hotel for travelers whose flight was delayed or cancelled came to my mind. Unfortunately, the existing facilities for rest in Beijing airport are not able to meet the current demands of people. Even now, during a Christmas break, I feel that I have to apply my skills and knowledge; thus, I am passing an internship at China International Trust and Investment Corporation (CITIC). Here I get into details of foreign capital investment into advanced technologies utilizing world’s best practices in conducting operational management. I am sure that this experience will allow me to understand economic theories easier following the principle “from practice to theory”. Working during Christmas break is not a burden for me as I am a bit of a workaholic in the most positive sense of this word.
Being able to balance between leisure and studies, I initiated a bake-sell at school as a part of my extra-curriculum activities. In fact, all the profit gained during this campaign was donated to YuShu China that was suffering from the aftermath of an earthquake. Later, my team and I organized a “Beijing 725 Sunset Rave” party in summer 2013. The key purpose of this event was to apply my knowledge in economy and make it more close to real world problems. Besides, this event had to act as a platform for both international and domestic students to communicate and make friends. My team and I did a great job for this party: public speaking, event planning, and organization were among my responsibilities. As a result of our hard work, a sum of nearly $11,000 was collected and further donated to one of the schools that needed it.
Overall, my training, experience, and interests are closely related to business and economy; however, I would prefer to deepen my knowledge in economy – that is why I am applying for University course. It is also important for me to be an evidence-based specialist, which predetermines my general interest in world economy, especially in the reasons of world economic crisis and mechanisms of minimizing and eliminating its negative consequences for the world community. As a true patriot of my country, I dream to develop a comprehensive plan of economic super development of China that will be an example for other countries of how a grounded and systematic economic policy can predetermine its success and prosperity. My utmost dream is to ensure social protection and economic stability for all people in the world by eliminating poverty and oligarchy and ensuring strong middle-class prosperity against the background of a whole-country economic growth.
At the same time, I am sure that a good specialist should never stop in his/her development; consequently, economics for me does not end beyond the walls of University. On the contrary, it supports and completed my lifetime goals and interests. I will never lose my aim in life, as economic issues have always been important influential factors that predetermined people’s content. Evidently, only an economically developed community can be a strong foundation for a happy nation that is confident in its future. Perhaps, the only thing that I lack is a well-established professional training with devoted educators, inquisitive fellows, and educational program that is tested through years. Combination of these factors will add to fulfillment of my lifetime career goals and inclinations.
