You Need To Know To Perform Abhyanga in the Right Way

  • Abhyanga is known for being the most popular and specific way of performing massage in Ayurveda that focuses on improving the overall health by natural practices. In this process abhyanga massage oil is applied to the entire body, from the scalp to the soles of your feet. This technique mainly focuses on the use of oil. It is designed to enhance overall health and wellness when accompanied by specific massage strokes. Regular abhyanga therapy, whether conducted by an Ayurvedic practitioner or at home, has many advantages. (Information source: https://rasa-ayurveda.com/collections/abhyanga-body-oils)

    Choose the appropriate oil

Oils can be selected based on an individual's temperament, imbalances, and seasonal factors. For centuries, sesame and coconut oil have been used for daily self-abhyanga. Sesame oil is a warming oil that is perfect for late fall, winter, and early spring days, as well as for people who have a lot of cold in their body. Coconut oil, on the other hand, is a cooling oil that is ideal for late spring, summer, and early fall days, as well as for people who have a lot of heat in their body. Traditional Ayurvedic oils also used to contain healing herbs that were responsible for enhancing the oil's effectiveness.

    A step-by-step guide to performing self-abhyanga

Receiving Abhyanga from an experienced massage therapist can be quite relaxing. However, Abhyanga can also be used as a form of self-massage. This allows you to perform the massage whenever it is most convenient for you. Make sure to wear minimal clothing while performing Abhyanga. Here are the basic techniques you need to follow while performing Abhyanga.

    • Fill a clean, empty shampoo or squeeze bottle halfway with oil. Warm the oil in the bottle by placing it in a pot of hot water.
    • Apply the oil to your entire body, including your scalp. Use circular strokes to massage the oil into your scalp.
    • Proceed to your brow, ears, cheeks, and jawline.
    • Moving in clockwise and circular strokes, massage your chest and abdomen. Make sure to massage your ribs inwards on your trunk as well.
    • Carry on to your back and hips. Massage your arms and legs in long, straight strokes. On your joints, move in circular motions.
    • Make sure to massage your toes and soles, as well as your feet.
    • Relax for 10 minutes to allow the oil to absorb into your skin.
    • Take a bath or shower in warm water. To remove the oil, use a mild cleanser.

Some tips to follow for Abhyanga self-massage

You can follow these guidelines for a relaxing self-massage:

    1. Make sure the oil is warm but not too hot before using it.
    2. Consider using an oil warmer that is powered by electricity. It's lightweight and portable. To catch the oil stains, use an old towel.
    3. Take your time on each portion of your body.
    4. When walking after massaging your soles with oil, be cautious as it can cause you to slip.
    5. When you get out of the shower, use a clean, fresh towel.

Self-abhyanga, or oil massage, should be done regularly, with at least one monthly coordinated abhyanga therapy by qualified Panchakarma Technicians. You can do self-abhyanga at home every morning after your skin has been prepped with a dry brush and is ready to receive the oil's moisturising nourishment.
