Dosing is a commonly used term in the industrial field. The process of feeding chemicals or medicines in small quantities is known as dosing. For medicine, the term dose is used whereas the wider term dosing is generally used for inanimate objects.
Usually there are several concepts of dosing and mixing and that gets pretty confusing to understand. But primarily there are two dosing systems that are used for different applications and they are – Volumetric Doser and Gravimetric Doser System.
Volumetric Dosing involves dissolving a particular compound into a liquid for it to be measured easily. Whereas Gravimetric Dosing system includes constant blending of materials at the highest level of accuracy.

Volumetric Dosing
Volumetric dosing units meter components on the basis of its volume. This means that calibration needs to be carried out. They can either be operated synchronously or asynchronously.
In synchronous dosing, all components’ units meter simultaneously as the dosing cycle is synchronized with that of material feed which is found in the downstream production equipment. This method does not necessarily require mechanical mixing.
Whereas, in asynchronous dosing units’ meter of independent components on the downstream equipment. Here, they must be mixed actively.

Volumetric Dosing Dispenser – When You Should Use It?
With Volumetric Doser you can precisely measure the volume of the product that can be discharged into the hopper. This type of dosing dispenser fits perfectly in the food industry for dosing of products such as powders, flour, dried fruits, etc. Alternatively, it can be used in other industries as well such as the plastic processing industry for dosing granules or even for dosing glue.
If you are dealing with very high viscosity products, granules or powders then the products are contained in a hopper and discharged into the container by a specific unit of time. For gelatinous or liquid products, a volumetric dosing system is applied by using a piston where the products are pushed into the container.
Gravimetric Dosing
Gravimetric Dosing unit weighs the material and there is no need for calibration in this dosing system. Primarily, there are two methods in gravimetric dosing and they are – loss-in-weight and the other is gain-in-weight.
In loss-in-weight, the system measures the reduction in the mass of the ingredients that remains in the supply hopper. On the other hand, in gain-in-weight, the system meters the components consecutively and their collective weight is measured.
Gravimetric Dosing Dispenser – When It Is Used?
Gravimetric dosing dispenser is used when you need precise dosing of different components used in the final product. Generally, gravimetric dosing dispensers are used when high-accuracy dosing is required to be carried out.
Gravimetric dosing is used in pharmaceutical industry, chemical industry and more. For granules or a high viscosity product or powder, the gravimetric dosing system is applied by using a hopper where the products are stored which is then connected to a dynamic scale that consistently measures the weight.
