How to choose your watch

  • We finally presents you with a guide to buying your first watch, complete with advice on what to choose, how and where to buy!

    The clock

Nowadays the watch is gaining more and more importance as a male accessory (and female, of course) and as a culture. In addition to the image that a person gives of himself starting from a job interview, a briefing, rather than during free time and even on the beach, by the sea, this object is increasingly the son of the passion of the wearer . Out of fashions and speculations, the culture for the art of the watch is silently conquering the hearts of young people and adults, leading to the affirmation of the timepiece as personal satisfaction, even before as a status.

We know, every occasion needs its watch, but a neophyte approaching this world for the first time which one should he choose? In this article we try to guide you in the maze of this choice. Obviously in the selection of a watch, especially the first, there are many variables to take into account, and this is where we come into play!

    The movement

First of all, when you start looking for the first watch to buy, you have to ask yourself what kind of watch you are looking for: a quartz or mechanical movement watch?
Quartz watches are all those watches that need an electrical component inside to work. The mechanical ones, on the other hand, work thanks to springs and gears that guarantee the movement of the hands for a few days before having to be recharged.

The mechanical movements in turn are divided into manual and automatic movements. The former must be loaded directly by the user, acting directly on the crown. The automatic ones, on the other hand, thanks to a rotor and some springs, are able to recharge autonomously, through the natural movements of the hand and wrist, which are made while walking or writing.

Obviously all three have their pros and cons. As far as we are concerned, we strongly advise you to focus on choosing a watch with a mechanical movement, possibly of manufacture, or created directly by the manufacturer, which is usually synonymous with quality and precision. It goes without saying that a mechanical watch usually costs more than a quartz, except for special cases such as the Élégante by FP Journe.

As for complications, however, a single time or chronograph, to begin with, would seem the wisest choice.

    The materials and the design

Another aspect to take into consideration is the design of the timepiece and, in particular, the shapes and dimensions. As a first watch you should try to focus on a well-known and recognizable design, simple but not trivial or used by too many fashion houses. In the choice of design, the use to be made of it comes into play, especially the context, which also influences the choice between a complicated watch or just time.

In fact, you can opt for a more sporty watch Rolex, for a carefree daily use in informal contexts or for a more classic model Rolex, especially if you want to show it off mainly on more formal and elegant occasions.

As for the materials, we recommend focusing on steel for a watch to be used every day, or titanium, for the first sports watch. These materials, in fact, are less expensive, more resistant, less delicate and often associated with timepieces that can be easily resold in case you get bored with your purchase. For the classic, on the other hand, gold seems an obligatory choice, but still offers a lot of room for choice between white and yellow, depending on taste and will.
