You've undoubtedly heard of "magic mushrooms" (or maybe you've eaten them, which is OK too). Of course, you'd think of the hallucinogenic type, but it turns out that ordinary old mushrooms are also really fantastic.
Indeed, the small mushrooms have been progressively gaining popularity for their supposed health advantages over the years (beginning millennia ago with Eastern medicine). "Mushrooms are quite different," Sandra Carter, creator of Om, Organic Mushroom Nutrition, explains. "They're strong in antioxidants, beta-glucans, and amino acids, as well as vitamin D—and a natural, vegan source of it—and other vitamins and minerals."
And Carter would be aware. She has a Ph.D. in preventative medicine, a master's degree in public health, and has spent years investigating the qualities of various mushrooms alongside mycologist Steve Farrar.
She's just relaunched her firm Om (formerly known as Mushroom Matrix) with 10 various organic mushroom powders, ranging from an immunity-boosting reishi to a customized "beauty blend" made up of eight different types of mushrooms to promote hair, skin, and nail health.
Carter produces 12 distinct mushroom species at Om's headquarters in San Marcos, CA, to use in the formulation of her powders. Cordyceps (popular with athletes for its supposed energy-boosting effect), the adaptogenic reishi, and maitake, which reportedly controls blood sugar, are a few of her favorites.
However, if you think you'll merely toss some golden teacher mushroom into your next salad, think again. "A lot of the mushrooms we cultivate, like cordyceps or reishi, would not be seen in a standard produce store," Carter explains. "As a result, it makes far more sense to ingest them in powder form." Carter suggests putting mushroom powder in your morning smoothie, adding it to your salad dressing for lunch, or tossing it in the pan while sautéing your vegetables for the night. "The powders don't have a strong flavor, so they won't interfere with anything you're cooking," Carter explains. "And it's a product that you really want to take every day to get the most out of it, so it's crucial to make it a part of your daily ritual."
