WHAT SKILLS SHOULD NEW SKATER PRACTICE?

  •

Skateboarding comes with a lot of skills and tricks which may be overwhelming to beginners. Below are some of the most important skills that everskater need to practice before going any further.

The prerequisite thing is that you must be familiar with your board and understand how the board will react to your movements, you can check it out at SkateAdvisor for more details.

Here are the key skills you need to know:

    PUSHING

Your board is definitely not able to go anywhere without pushing. The simple explanation for pushing is to use your back foot which should be your dominant foot to push onto the ground so your body and your skateboard can move forward. Remember to pull your foot back to the board after pushing and keep balance as well as steer the board at the same time.

The harder you push, the faster you will go, you can also bend your knees a bit to achieve more momentum while pushing.

In case the board tends to go in the wrong direction, bend your knees inward or outward to steer the board.

    CARVING

If you find it difficult to turn your board while skating, try to put your arm in front of you and point them to the direction you want. However, you need to learn how to control your board to learn more tricks in skateboarding. It simply depends on your body, to turn the board in the expected direction, put your weight on that part of the board. It might sound easi at first look but it requires a lot of practice to get better at controlling your skateboard.

    KICKTURNS

The main drawback of carving is that you can not change the direction immediately, which is not good if you encounter any obstacles on the road. Therefore, kick turns are necessary, this skill requires you to put your weight on the tail of the board and lift the head off the ground. Simultaneously, apply all your weight to the front of the deck as well as steer the head to the direction you want to follow.

    TIC TACS

You may want to try other ways to move forward instead of pushing, then tic tacs is a great choice. To do tic tacs well, you need to master the kickturn to be able to lift the board and push it back to the ground almost immediately.
