OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) is a flat light emitting t

  • Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are a type of flat light-emitting technology that is created by sandwiching a series of organic thin films between two conducting conductors. Electrical current causes a bright light to be emitted when the current is applied.  In contrast to LCD displays (which require a white backlight), OLED displays do not require a backlight, allowing them to be thinner and more energy efficient than sunlight readable LCD displays.

OLED displays are not only thin and energy efficient, but they also provide the highest image quality available, and they can be made transparent, flexible, foldable, and even rollable and stretchable in the future, allowing for a variety of applications. OLEDs are the technology of the future in terms of display technology!

OLED vs. sunlight readable LCD: Which is better?

When compared to an sunlight readable lcd display, an OLED display offers the following advantages:

Images with improved contrast and brightness, a wider color range and much faster refresh rates are all possible thanks to the advancements in technology.
    Reduced power consumption is achieved.
A more straightforward design allows for ultra-thin, flexible, foldable, and transparent displays.
Improved durability - OLEDs are extremely durable and can operate in a wide range of temperature conditions.

OLED displays that are flexible and transparent are the wave of the future.

As previously stated, OLEDs have the potential to be used to create flexible and transparent displays. This is extremely exciting because it opens the door to a whole new world of opportunities:

OLED displays that are curved and mounted on non-flat surfaces
    OLEDs that can be worn
OLEDs that can be folded and rolled up can be used to create new mobile devices, such as smartphones.
Transparent OLEDs embedded in windows or car windshields are becoming increasingly popular.

OLEDs that are flexible have been on the market for several years (in smartphones, wearables, and other devices), and in 2019, we have witnessed the introduction of the first foldable devices, including smartphones that open up to become tablet devices with foldable OLEDs, such as the Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X - both of which are smartphones that open up to become tablet devices with foldable OLEDs. LG also announced the world's first rollable OLED television in 2019 - a 65-inch OLED R television that can be rolled into its base!

What is the operation of OLEDs?

It is possible to create an OLED by sandwiching a series of organic thin films between two conductors. Electrical current causes a bright light to be emitted when the current is applied.  For a more in-depth look at the OLED technology, please visit this page.

So, what exactly is it about OLEDs that is organic?

OLEDs are classified as organic because they are composed primarily of carbon and hydrogen. Organic food and farming are not associated with this technology, even though OLEDs are extremely energy efficient and do not contain any harmful metals, making it a truly green technology.
