Modern web design trends for 2021

  • Horizontal scrolling

Horizontal scrolling, once considered a web design faux pas, is making a comeback.

More and more site designers are experimenting with horizontal scrolling. Those that do it best deviate from the norm not for the sake of being unique, but as a practical approach to gradually reveal secondary information, such as in an image gallery.

In order to use horizontal scroll successfully in 2021, designers will keep the following in mind:

    • Allow various means to navigate, such as arrow buttons with clear labels, rather than forcing visitors to scroll  across horizontal text.
    • Use explicit visual cues to identify when horizontal scrolling is used in content, and don't disguise these indicators behind hovers.
    • Consider what material would benefit from a horizontal scroll - a photo gallery is a nice example, since a      horizontal scroll would show readers a tiny preview and give them the option to view more or continue scrolling down the page.
    • When reading content, don't make it necessary to scroll horizontally.

We used a modest amount of horizontal scroll on our own Designer feature page to zoom in on a large image and show more relevant elements of the image at a larger scale to complement the relevant material.

To better highlight the subtleties of the UI, Webflow's Designer feature page adds horizontal scroll to a huge image of the Webflow Designer.

On the home page of Momento Design Studio, there is a clear indication next to the major button that also acts as a link, progressively guiding you over to the featured works when you click it. The scrolling is smooth and quick, allowing the featured photographs to stand out.

    3D visuals everywhere

With the introduction of higher-resolution screens, 3D design has progressed significantly beyond Geocities' blocky and bevelled edges. We've seen high-quality 3D images easily integrated into online designs. Rather than being distracting, they enhance the entire user experience.

Sennep, a creative agency, uses 3D components across their website to add depth. Between all of the design aspects, there's a good sense of harmony. This is a great illustration of how 3D can have a stronger impact in more simple layouts.

With this funny and fantastic hero animation, Yaya put their love for 3D front and centre on their homepage.

Yaya's home page hero depicts a person engaging with a futuristic manufacturing machine in a beautiful 3D picture.

Pitch, a presentation software firm, has a vibrant layout with three-dimensional forms, drop shadows, gradients, and layered elements in this example below. This design comes to life thanks to these 3D design components.
