How Students Fight Racism in Our Time

  • Of all the challenges and tricky issues students face at school, racism is the trickiest.
Are you wondering how to fight racism at school? If so then you have stumbled onto the right page.

In this article, we’re going to discuss practical ways how to deal with racism at school. But before that…

Is Racism A Big Issue In Schools?

Racism in schools happens in different ways. For instance, it can be through bullying, biased thoughts, or institutional policies and rules that can discriminate against students based on their color or ethnicity. For instance, just recently, the USA was (and is still) grappling with racism where blacks are discriminated against.

The good news is that there are ways to tackle racism for students, teachers, and parents at school. So without further ado, here is how to fight racism at school as a student.

    Understand That Racism Exists

If you have checked on the Black Lives Matter essay topics provided by eduzaurus.com, then you will know how much racism is in our learning institutions these days. And the first thing to fight racism as a student is to make yourself aware that it exists. The hurdle that the fight against racism is facing is that many students are still hiding it. Unless students admit that it exists, it will continue to get worse.

Sometimes students can be surrounded by ideas they aren’t aware that they are racist. Make yourself aware that racism exists first then find ways to fight it.

Know How To Deal With It

Another way to fight racism is to think ahead. In this case, you should think about every possible way you could do to deal with any form of racism.  The reality is that different students can cope with racism differently.

As a rule, you should know what to do if targeted with any kind of racism. This applies even when someone else is targeted. For instance, your friend could be targeted because he or she’s of a different religion. What would you do in such a case?

    Speak Up

Part of the reason racism is becoming a tricky issue to deal with is that some students have chosen to be bystanders. When you keep silent, you support racism. Speak up. For instance, if you encounter a racist student or if someone else is targeted by the racism of any kind, you can say “Hey, that’s not cool” or “You shouldn’t do that please”. Speaking up against any kind of racism can help to stop it.

    Face The Racist

It reaches a time when speaking out won’t help to deal with racism. Truly, facing a racist, for instance, a bully can be daunting. However, you should stand up and call out the act. Let the bully know that you’re not ready to tolerate their actions anymore. For instance, if it’s a racist comment or remarks, you could say something like “Hey, stop putting such comments, they aren’t helping you in any way”.

Understand That You Have Great Qualities

Oftentimes students studying abroad are seen as poor or without a good education. Don’t let these perceptions or comments hold you down because you have great qualities and that’s why you got the chance to study in that school.

    Inform Your Teacher

Unless your teacher is also a racist (although this rarely happens), you should let them know that you’re facing racism. Let your teacher or guidance counselor know how racist actions are preventing you from focusing on your studies. They will be able to offer you solutions or advice you on how to deal with the issue.
