What is good about the “engine braking” technique, besides brak

  • Engine braking is a well-known technique among drivers and quite effectively used when it is necessary to slow down, but at the same time not to burn the brake pads once again. In addition, this method of deceleration helps to minimize the consequences of a brake failure. But there are a few more useful tricks that allow you to implement a similar method.

In modern driving schools in the city of Rocklin teach a lot and for quite a long time. However, it is one thing to listen to the course of a young fighter, and another to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge in practice. For example, many people who studied at https://go4cdl.com/programs/cdl-class-a-standard-program know about such a technique as engine braking, where they study under the standard CDL class A program to drive a truck, and did not buy a driver's license. the rights. However, due to inexperience, they are afraid to use it, or are embarrassed. But in vain. After all, this way to slow down a heavy car is very effective. In addition, it can save someone's life if the car's brake system fails for some reason.
But there are a couple more advantages of using this technique, which were hardly talked about in a driving school.

It is sad but true: young truck drivers forget about safety in order to save fuel, and on long descents, for some reasons known only to them, they move, as they say, coasting, turning off the gearbox to “neutral”.

First, it's completely unsafe. After all, if you happen to dodge a truck that has taken off in the forehead, it will take precious fractions of seconds to shift into gear, during which the car with the gear engaged would already have gone to a safe trajectory.
Secondly, the inclusion of "neutral" does not save fuel at all, no matter how much novice truck drivers would like to believe in it. The thing is that in the neutral position of the gearbox, the engine continues to work.

But if, moving at speed, the box is left in gear and the gas pedal is released, then the fuel supply to the engine stops. The motor runs really idle. The savings, of course, are small, but, unlike driving in “neutral”, it definitely is. In addition, the car is ready for unforeseen situations - when required, you can simply step on the gas, the fuel will go into the cylinders, and you can easily make any maneuver: dodge the truck, accelerate to overtake.

Engine braking also helps cool the powertrain if there are unforeseen problems in the cooling system. It happens that after being idle in a traffic jam, you break out onto a free section of the track, and you notice that the temperature arrow has crawled into the red zone. Naturally, the driver has a desire to stop and figure out what the problem is. However, this should not be done.
First, it is better to accelerate, and then, without turning off the gear, release the gas pedal (unless, of course, the track is so free). The fuel supply to the combustion chambers is stopped. And the incoming air flows cool the engine compartment, the radiator and the engine itself. At the same time, the coolant continues to circulate through the system, because the transmission did not “disconnect” the wheels from the engine. And consequently, the crankshaft, drive belts, generator and, of course, the pump responsible for the circulation of coolant in the cooling system continue to move and work.
As they say, everything comes with experience. And most importantly, do not forget that fools learn from their own experience, and smart ones learn from someone else's.
