As per Timpanogos Grotto, the branch of the National Speleological Society in Utah, there were six incidents of people getting dangerously stuck and trapped in different tight squeezes of this cave, between 1999 and 2004. Though all these people made it out alive, every single time the rescue and search teams feared the next incident would be fatal. Because of these fears they decided to close the cave in 2006 in order to prevent further incidents from occurring. But, it was opened after a few years.

A few months after its reopening, the Jones family visited the cave to reconnect with each other and have some fun. During this time, John was 26 years old and was married. He attended the medical school in Virginia and was back home for Thanksgiving. As a kid, he loved such expeditions and his father used to take John and his brother on spelunking adventures in Utah. According to his family, he fell in love with the dark beauty of the caves. But unfortunately, his first caving expedition in the Nutty Putty cave turned out to be his last. But by then, he was terribly stuck and inverted at a 70-degree angle. During the next 27 hours, about 137 volunteers tried their best to save John. The rescuers even installed pulleys in the cave and tried pulling John with ropes but their efforts went in vain. One of the rescuers was badly injured when a pulley broke and hit him right in the face. But, these heroic efforts could not save John, and he passed away a few minutes before midnight. It was a day before Thanksgiving and his body could not be retrieved from the cave. Because of this, his parents decided to leave it inside and thereafter, the Nutty Putty cave was sealed and permanently closed.
