Can Bimatoprost Regrow Scalp Hair?

  • Several studies have found that the prostaglandin compound bimatoprost can stimulate hair growth. Currently, the FDA-approved indications for bimatoprost are eyelash growth (under the brand name Lumigan, 0.03%) and glaucoma (under the brand name Latisse , 0.03%). However, the research on eyelash growth has not been applied to the scalp to see whether it can also promote hair growth there.

The reason for this is that the hair follicles of the eyelash and the scalp are very different from each other. The follicles of the eyelash are very specialized and have unique growth cycles that are unaffected by the same issues as those on the scalp. In addition, the follicles of the eyelash have higher proportions of hairs in the telogen phase, or resting phase, than those on the scalp. Consequently, it was thought that eyelash hair follicles would not respond to the same types of stimulation that would be required to induce scalp hair growth.

To try to determine whether bimatoprost could stimulate hair follicles on the scalp, researchers set up a series of experiments. They first shaved the skin on the backs of mice and then applied either a control or bimatoprost solution to the shaved areas. They then monitored the growth of the hair follicles. In both cases, they found that the bimatoprost solution stimulated the follicles to enter the anagen phase faster than did the control groups.
