Setting Up Your Undergraduate Apartment to Feel Like Home

  • You’ve finally gotten the right choice of space that you need. Nevertheless, you’re still struggling on making your rental apartment feel like home.

This is a dilemma that’s not unique to you. A lot of apartments restrict specific types of decorations like painting or decorations involving you placing nails in the walls. Most times, these limitations prevent apartment renters from maintaining total flexibility on the type of set-up they want.

However, there’s a plethora of things you can do to your new space to make it look aesthetically pleasing and feel like home. You’ll be in your home at least 30% of the time and you need to ensure that it offers you much-needed peace and comfort.

    Clean Your Home

The most important step in making your new apartment feel like home is to clean it thoroughly. It wouldn’t be nice to find repulsive stains, spills, and messes left behind by the previous occupants.

Even though the space might look clean at first glance, you might not realize how dirty it is until you give it a deep clean. You need to scrub your new apartment, clean the windows, and mop your floors.

While cleaning, you’ll have to displace appliances like the microwave and stove to clean the dust accumulated under them. After cleaning, your new home will take on a refreshing new look.

    Setup Your Entrance

The entrance to your apartment is the first glance of your home that visitors will see. Nevertheless, your apartment’s entryway also helps to raise your mood on days when your mood is down.

If you have enough space, you can place a lamp propped up on a table near the entrance. You can also place an interesting picture or a personal photo of you and your loved ones by the entryway. Other ideas include potted plants and vases.

    Install a Bookshelf

If you’re an avid reader, getting a bookshelf can help to add a lot of personality to your home. On the shelves, you can place the books both horizontally and vertically to improve the aesthetic look.

Books don’t have to take up the entire space on your shelf. You can mix in some vases and artwork. Placing a small lamp to light up the bookshelf is another way you can make your new space feel more like home.

    Relate With Your New Neighbors

Sometimes, trying to make new friends can feel quite complicated. However, one of the fastest ways to settle into UMass undergraduate housing is to make small talk with your new neighbors.

Some buildings hold social events for the renters to get to know each other better. If your apartment has a gym, you can try to make new friends while you work out.
