While there isn’t a ton you can do about soundproofing the structure of an apartment since you do not own it, there are a few things that you can do to prevent noise from coming into the apartment. This is done usually to help muffle the sound a bit before it comes in. One option is to get thick, soundproof curtains and place them on all of the windows. This can prevent some of the noise you hear outside the apartment.
If the noise comes from the upstairs or side neighbors, you can consider a light white noise machine. This can drown out some of the disturbances and gives you something better to listen to. Just keep tabs on the volume of the noise machine so it doesn’t end up bothering other people. And when you are sleeping, consider some earplugs to wear around the property so you don’t hear as much while home.
When you are looking into a new apartment, take the time to ask the property manager or the landlord if there is a top floor apartment available for you to move into. These tend to have less noise because you will not have someone above you moving around or making as much noise. Make sure that you have a good idea of what is above and below you before you agree to sign the lease. You do not want to move into a new place to find out that you are under a gym or right above a late-night restaurant. Those are noisy and will be almost impossible to keep the noise down while you are there.
