What is Diabetic Retinopathy?

  • One of the conditions that you may encounter when it comes to the health of your eyes is known as diabetic retinopathy. This is a common complication that can happen to the eyes when the individual suffers from diabetes. It is often the leading cause of blindness in adults in the United States and will occur when diabetes is not properly managed for the individual. It can be characterized by progressive damage to the retina and the blood vessels there and can make the individual more sensitive to light at the back of the eyes.

This eye condition can often progress through four different stages that include:

    # Mild nonproliferative retinopathy

    # Moderate retinopathy which is the blockage of some of the vessels in the retina.

    # Severe retinopathy, which is where more of the vessels are blocked. This can lead to the retina not getting the blood supply that it needs and it will not be able to grow new blood vessels.

    # Proliferative retinopathy: This is the most advanced stage of the condition and by this point, it can be hard to reverse the damage.

This is a condition that is going to affect both of the eyes in the patient for most cases, which can make it difficult to see. The risks are going to be reduced if you manage the diabetes. This can include controlling your blood sugars through diet and medication, controlling your blood pressure, and handling any lipid abnormalities that show up. Early diagnosis can help the eye doctor give you the right treatment and reduces your risk of losing your vision.

The problem is that many of the diabetic patients who need it will not go and get their eyes examined until it is too late. This is why it can lead to blindness in many adults in the United States. This is a condition that can be managed effectively, but you need to handle the diabetes and work with your eye doctor to take care of your eyes.
