No one wants to deal with a barking dog when they live in a small apartment. This may be a natural thing that dogs will do, but it is not a lot of fun for those who have to hear it all day long while you are at work. While you won’t be able to completely eliminate the barking, there are a few things that you can do to help keep it to a minimum.
One thing to consider is the breed of dog that you bring into the apartment. There are some breeds that tend to bark less than the others. You can choose to go with this type of dog and then work on eliminating the barking even more through training and spending time with the dog. But if you already have a dog and they tend to like to bark, then you may need to teach them through training how to tone it down and not do this as much.
For example, if your dog tends to bark quite a bit when they are excited to see you walk through the door, then you can redirect their attention with a puzzle or a treat. This way, they will be able to turn their attention somewhere else and will stop with the excited barking. You can also seal the noise from going outside and bothering your neighbors as much if you turn on the TV when you are gone or choose some white noise.
Remember that the barking is going to happen more often when your dog is bored or they have a ton of pent-up energy. You need to take care of this as much as possible. Don’t forget to play with them when you are home, leave different toys around the apartment to entertain them, and take them for walks each day. This helps to wear them out and eliminates some of the boredom so they are able to relax and not bark the whole time you are not home. Training them needs to happen as well to avoid problems with your other neighbors.
