ROD STEWART has taken some heat
Beats Pro White for morphing from
Diddy Beats White old-school rock star to old-style standards balladeer, but when it comes to filming
Beats Studio White a Christmas special, he wears it well.
It’s probably significant that he laces “Merry Christmas, Baby,” filmed on a warm summer day in Pacific Palisades, with self-aware references to exactly what
White Beats Pro he’s doing.
Standing on a holiday-decorated stage in front of an
White Tour Beats orchestra and choir, with producer David Foster at the piano and artificial snow around his feet, the Rodster looks to be way more in the debt of Frank Sinatra than Elvis Presley.
And so what? With his classic rasp now smoothed down to something just mildly gravelly, he runs through a dozen Christmas classics in a lively, pleasing way. Maggie, he couldn’t have tried any more.
Besides, where else are you going to hear “Auld Lang Syne” with several of Robert
Beats Tour White Burns’ original verses and a chorus of bagpipes?
The song selection is fairly safe, and he stays with familiar midtempo arrangements. The unique parts mostly involve the guests, including his duet with Mary J. Blige on “We Three Kings” and with Cee Lo Green on “Merry Christmas, Baby.”
Ella Fitzgerald drops in from the next world for a virtual duet with Rod on “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” and Michael Bublé joins him for a nice fast-paced “Winter Wonderland.”
The “backstage” shtick doesn’t add a lot to the evening, but the music does. This special should move a lot of copies of the new CD on which he first recorded these tunes, and if it gives PBS a boost, that’s great, too.
And in its own way, yeah, maybe viewers will even think it’s a little sexy.
