Turns out, all of his crazy Yankee years were good for something other than entertaining fans of baseball and drama alike and creating colorful baseball lore.
Don Mattingly chuckles at the idea, but his playing career and his time as a coach in the Bronx perhaps helped prepare him for the cauldron he’s in now ― running a superteam in the glitz of Los Angeles. Mattingly’s Dodgers have the same combo of lofty stars and lofty expectations he once saw annually while he was a pinstriped superstar.
So it’s no wonder Mattingly looked at ease in the visiting dugout at Citi Field before the opener of a series against the Mets, though his expensive club is struggling. The Dodgers, whose payroll of about $215 million is second only to ― who else? ― the Yankees, were just 8-10 before a victory over the Mets Tuesday. Pitching injuries, a power outage by star sluggers and inconsistent play are to blame.
But Mattingly, flecks of gray at his temples and in his razor stubble, is mostly upbeat in a conversation about 20 minutes long with a group of reporters.
“Nobody really wants to

“We can sit here right now and be pretty confident that we have a good club and it’s a matter of us playing better.”
Mattingly beamed when he talked about having lunch with an old Yankee pal, Yogi Berra, on Monday, an off-day for the Dodgers. Berra and his wife, Carmen, live in an assisted-living facility, Mattingly said, and Mattingly met them and other family members at Berra’s museum in Montclair, N.J.
“That was good,” Mattingly said. “He looks good. Yogi is going to be 88 this year. His mind’s good and he’s walking around, showing

After the warmth

He knew one of his starting pitchers, Chad Billingsley, was slated for a doctor’s appointment Tuesday to find out if he needed Tommy John surgery, and he does. That means the Dodgers have lost Billingsley, Zack Greinke and Chris Capuano to injury after beginning the season with a surplus of starters. Ted Lilly, Wednesday’s starter, will be the eighth Dodger to start a game this year.
Mattingly’s star, Matt Kemp, isn’t hitting. Andre Ethier, expected to deliver pop, has two homers. Among all teams, only the Marlins had scored fewer
