Hows that list coming along? You wll remember in-the first section of this line I covered getting a list together of some ideas on your site or blog market. Hopefully you have a sizeable list of basic categories. The following steps involve narrowing the keywords and then performing some supply and demand study.
There are many keyword tools out there. I love to make use of Overtures since its free and easy. Keep in mind that the figures from Overture are usually inflated sometimes a little sometimes a good deal. They fudge the figures by counting like requests fly and flies or affiliates and affiliate get counted since the same issue. Remember they earn more money convincing their potential advertisers a search term is popular.
Therefore plug in one of the common search terms from your list. Im going to test dogs. Listed here are the results:
Searches done in February 2006

1104234 dog
225786 dog breed
183180 dog education basics
152056 dog show

I edited a few like sneak dog out for expediency. I like dog training [basics] and dog breeds. Seems like individuals are searching for both quite a bit. Given that we've the demand, lets go over to Google and always check the source.
Key in the actual search term, putting quotes around it so Google looks for exactly what we would like. Google returns 5,59o,000 results, If you devote dog breeds. Try looking in the top of right-hand corner for this number.
Have you ever heard of Sumantra Roy? Not likely. Hes a guy who specializes in specific keyword research and Search Engine Optimization. He has invented a system termed the Keyword Effectiveness Index or KEI to gauge the potential of the keyword. I take advantage of an easier version of it. Here it is:
KEI = Demand / Supply
That's - Demand separated by Supply. The bigger the KEI the greater. Thus giving a simple KEI to you that ranges from 1-10. People compare this for the Richter Scale, meaning that each successive number is greatly better compared to the last number.
Within our example above, the KEI for dog breed could be.04, which isnt that good.
Dog Training Basics produces 45,600 results for Google. The KEI could be 4, that will be great. Hmmwait one minute. Our lesson is concluded by that. Bye. [Sound of running down the hall and door slamming]. Only a little nerd humor there.
Do a few more and see what you come up with. I did dog title and got a of.10, which is poor. I also tried dog gift, which got me a KEI of.07.
I often get the highest KEI keywords and put them back to the Overture tool and try it again.
Furthermore, Wordtracker does this all for you. Try it at no cost and see how easy it is. Just remember that they use different resources for both supply and demand than my example above, but that shouldnt make too much of a difference.
So now we should have a much smaller list that has some good prospects on it.
