Kokoschka had himself sustained severe head and lung injuries while fighting on the Eastern Front in World War One. Decades on, in the aftermath of World War Two, he recognised that the future of the world was still uncertain, and the cultural landscape under threat of being bulldozed by dangerous ideologies.
