LMIA Service Canada is a document that an employer in Canada may need to obtain before hiring a foreign worker. This document serves as proof that the employer is allowed to hire the foreign worker as no permanent resident or Canadian citizen is ready or able to fill a specific position. The LMIA document is issued by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). It helps ESDC to assess the impact of hiring a foreign national in Canada.
LMIA applications are detailed. They require lots of documentation and statistical tabulation. Once ESDC processes the LMIA application, it issues either a positive or a negative LMIA. A positive LMIA indicates that the employer is allowed to hire a foreign national to fill a position.
