  Spouse Sponsorship to Canada

  Living and working apart from your partner is difficult, but thankfully Canada understands this and has programmes that enable partners to reunite. If a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident (PR) has a spouse who lives abroad, they can sponsor that spouse's immigration to Canada for the purpose of reunification; in this scenario, if the application is successful, the spouse also becomes a permanent resident of Canada. This program is similar to others the IRCC offers for family sponsorship.

  Who can Sponsor?

  You are eligible to sponsor your spouse to Canada if-

  • You have a PR, are a citizen of Canada, or are an Indian as defined by the Canadian Indian Act.
  • You are over 18 years old.
  • You do not receive any government funding owing to any reason other than having a disability.
  • You have sufficient funding to sustain their immigration to Canada and their continued residence there.
  • You have a clean criminal record and have never been convicted of a crime.

  Who can be Sponsored?

  Unfortunately, this program cannot be used to support a fiancé or girlfriend/boyfriend. However, a list of relationships that are acceptable under this program is provided below.

  • Spouse- Someone to whom the sponsor is lawfully wed. And a formal document, such as a marriage certificate, must be used to prove the relationship.
  • Common Law Partner- This is a relationship in which the partners have lived together for at least a year in a setting that would suggest marriage but are not legally wed.
  • Conjugal Partner- The couples in this scenario have been together for longer than a year but have been unable to cohabitate due to any reason—religious, cultural, or otherwise.
