The Manual for Teachers is written in question-and-answer form and provides answers to a number of the more likely questions a student might ask. It also contains clarification of several terms the Course uses, explaining them within the theoretical framework of the Text and for his or her practical application through the Workbook.
A Course in Miracles was “scribed” by Dr Helen Schucman through a process of inner dictation that she identified as coming from Jesus. A clinical and research psychologist and tenured Associate Professor of Medical Psychology, she was assisted by Dr William Thetford, her department head, who had been also a tenured Professor of Medical Psychology at the Medical Center where they both worked. What exactly, then, is A Course in Miracles? The summary from its Introduction, which appears on page one of the Text, is quite succinct and brief but describes its core teaching perfectly. It reads:
Anyone at all can benefit from A Course in Miracles. One doesn't need to be an intellectual to learn from it and put it to use as a spiritual path. Nonetheless, it is written on a higher intellectual level with sophisticated metaphysical, theological, and psychological concepts incorporated into the teaching through the three books. Much of it's written in blank verse.
Thus, a reader/student who's not intellectually inclined and does not have any background in these areas could have difficulty understanding a lot of the material. This does not mean, though, that this kind of person couldn't be helped by reading through it and doing the exercises in the workbook. If the individual comes far from the Course being kinder, more loving and reassured of God's Love, and less angry, depressed, and fearful, then its purpose has been fulfilled. On another hand, there have been many highly educated people who were not able to relate genuinely to the Course at all. They will find another path considerably better with their needs and inclinations.
The Course says of itself that it's only one of many a large number of other forms of the universal course (M.1.4). It generally does not need to be for everyone. Some religions have claimed that theirs is the only true religion, the only way to be reconciled with God. A Course in Miracles isn't among them. Rather, the clear implication throughout the Course is that most people could eventually find a path which will lead them to God. It generally does not have to be this one.
Finally, the structure and flow of the writing can be likened more to a symphony with themes introduced, put aside, reintroduced, and developed than to the linear progression of ideas usually within an academic textbook, which systematically increases in complexity. This results in a interlocking matrix in which every part is integral and essential to the whole, while implicitly containing that whole within itself.
