Definition of “best” is subjective. In my opinion there is no best developer kind of thing. This is kind of a question which almost everyone have when they want to hire developers. They want to have best available developers and I understand & respect that part.
Companies can even
hire iOS developers and prefer them in the gaming niche over their in-house resources.
But I disagree to the fact knowing you will never be able to get a “best” game by just hiring a top developer. What you really need is a good production strategy and a tight process, which can help you to implement the idea as you visualize. Of course architecture and selection of toolchain is important as well. Once you have these elements in place, all you need is a developer who is competent enough to know the tool chain and ready to follow the pipeline.
Interviewing and hiring candidates with past experience in similar genre of games might help to a degree but can’t guarantee that they will perform same in your environment.
Regardless of all, always go for hiring a developer who loves playing video games himself. Because then you are matching profession with passion, and that gives higher chance of success.
