This plank art object project is suitable for those new to woodworking. It uses 4 species of wood to give the pattern a three-dimensional look. A C02 laser machine was used to prepare the many individual pieces, but you can use a jigsaw machine as an alternative. This art object can be a decoration for your home or a great gift.
MATERIALS
Four different species of wood in different colors. In this project we used maple, birch, cherry and dark walnut for the background. The boards should be about 0,3175 cm thick so that the shapes can be cut out of them with a CO2 laser machine;
A piece of plywood measuring 30.5 by 30.5 cm for the base;
Laser CO2 machine - or jigsaw machine;
Circular saw for hexagonal shaping of the finished wooden piece;
Wood glue, sandpaper.
STEP 1: LASER CUTTING OF WOOD FIGURES
First, prepare thin boards (about 0.3175 cm thick) of four different colored wood species. This project used maple, cherry and birch for the pattern and dark walnut for the star-shaped background. The maple, cherry and birch are contrasting enough in color to create shadows on the pattern and give the pattern a three-dimensional look. The finished product measures 25.4 centimeters across.
You can 3D print a few pieces to lay out the pattern and make gluing easier. But this is optional.
The pattern is based on a hexagonal shape, so all angles are 30 degrees, 60 degrees and multiples thereof.
Then you need to laser cut the various patterns from thin boards. You will need a total of 63 pieces to make the pattern.
For each maple, birch and cherry board.

For the walnut board
Star: six pieces;
Triangle: six pieces.
Pay attention to the direction of the wood grain when cutting the individual pieces, this gives the finished work a more natural look. Figure 6 is a mirror image of figure 5.
