In order to meet the deadline, the Baixada Arena will not have a retractable roof for the 2014 World Cup. After visiting the stadium in Curitiba this Monday (19.08), the FIFA Secretary-General Jerome Valcke announced the deal made with Clube Atlético Paranaense, in charge of the renovation works, which delays the building of the roof and makes it possible for the ground to be delivered on 31 December 2013.
“We discussed the situation in Curitiba, whether or not it'd be ready and we requested that the city and club delay the retractable roof, so that the stadium is ready for the World Cup. The agreement was made based on this understanding and I'm able to say that the stadium will be ready in time. We’re certain that we'll meet the targets established so that Curitiba can be one of the World Cup host cities. Now this issue has been resolved, we're no longer worried, nor do we have any doubts", said Valcke.
The Secretary guaranteed that the retractable roof was not a FIFA requirement for the stadium. “We never asked for that. It was part of the project, but it wasn’t a FIFA requirement. The roof is not essential for the World Cup. Therefore, it can be done later, thus, allowing the stadium to be ready for the World Cup", he explained.
This Monday, Altético Paranaense announced that 75.11% of the construction works had been finished. According to the club's president Mario Celso Petraglia, after renovations, they expect to play the first match at the ground on 26 January, as a test for the World Cup. Petraglia also confirmed that Atlético Paranaense is going to build the retractable roof after the World Cup.
The Minister of Sport Aldo Rebelo also visited the Baixada Arena and said to be pleased with what he saw. “I think that this is the fourth or fifth visit I make to the stadium and I've noticed how the pace of construction has picked up, and how much the project has progressed. The city will have more than the World Cup, but also a legacy related to the event. Curitiba has already been a World Cup host city in 1950 and among the Brazilian metropolises, has been a pioneer in the adoption of the most advanced urban mobility concepts, as well as in the building of modern football arenas, as is the case with the Baixada Arena itself", he added.
As in other World Cup stadiums, the delegation that visited the ground – made up of Jerome Valcke, Aldo Rebelo, LOC members, as well as former footballer Bebeto and Ronaldo – handed out a symbolic ticket to the builders, who will be entitled to watch a World Cup match at the stadium they helped build.
Altético Paranaense president also announced that the Baixada Arena will have a permanent outpatient clinic for children with heart problems.
