Alguns estudiosos sugerem que as idades do Capítulo 5 do Gênesis representam ciclos lunares, e não anos como os distiguimos actualmente.
Utilizando esta interpretação, Matusalém teria vivido 78 anos, uma idade ainda assim impressionante, considerando-se a expectativa de vida na antiguidade.
Mas esta teoria gera outro problema: sendo verdadeira, significa que Matusalém teve seu primeiro filho aos 15 anos, e Enoque, por sua vez, seria pai aos 5 anos de idade.
