One of the seven wonders of the world, Niagara falls is not only famous for its beauty but also a valuable source of hydroelectric power.
Niagara Falls is a geological wonder and one of the most famous waterfalls in the world. Straddling the border between the United States and Canada, it has been a popular tourist attraction for over 200 years, as well as a major source of hydroelectric power.
Located on the Niagara River, which drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, the combined falls have the highest flow rate of any waterfall in North America that has a vertical drop of more than 50 metres. The cities of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, and Niagara Falls, New York, United States, are connected by the Rainbow Bridge, just downriver from the falls, affords the closest view of the falls and is open to non-commercial vehicle traffic and pedestrians.
Niagara Falls is not the tallest waterfall in the world; however, the beauty of the falls comes from the height and the incredible volume of water running over the falls at a given time. Fish travel over Niagara Falls and most survive because of their ability to flow with the water.
Niagara Falls was formed starting more than 12,000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age when large torrents of water were released from the melting ice, draining into the Niagara River. The water plunged over the edge of the Niagara Escarpment – to what is now known as Lewiston, NY.
It is a name from which the "Niagara River" originated. The French explorers that came to Niagara gave this Indian tribe the name "Neutrals" because of their position and status as peace keepers between the two warring Indian nations - the Huron's and the Iroquois.
Niagara Falls is in the 9th percentile for safety, meaning 91% of cities are safer and 9% of cities are more dangerous. ... The rate of crime in Niagara Falls is 65.71 per 1,000 residents during a standard year. People who live in Niagara Falls generally consider the southeast part of the city to be the safest.
The American and Bridal Veil Falls are entirely in the US, the Horseshoe Falls flows in both countries although a major portion is in Canada.
With 3,160 tons of water flowing over Niagara Falls every second, it takes a lot of ice to freeze its waterfalls solid. In fact, the falls and Niagara River have never completely frozen in their own right.
