Hey all! This week I am very excited to have a special guest with me, certified Schwinn Instructor Katie Alexander. I have been taking "Spinning" class (as it is called) with Katie for a couple of years and today she is going to give us some great tips on indoor cycling in a class as well as on your own. When the weather is cold out, it can be hard to fit in a ride. But indoor cycling is possible under all weather conditions, a great low impact cardio and she will really kick your butt :)
1. Facts on spinning: Great low impact cardio, can burn 500-1000 calories in spin class and you can rock out to music at the same time.
2. Adjusting your bike: Make sure the seat is at hip height before mounting the bike. Make sure your handle bars are always higher than your seat- beginners lift handle bars a little bit higher. You can also adjust the seat to go forward or back depending on your comfort level. Your knee should also line up with your toe if you were to stop your stride.
3. Indoor cycling on your own (Build your own profile): Get the music that you want to jam out to and really feel the beat. Music makes a big difference and you can increase the resistance on the bike to simulate hills, or slightly decrease the resistance but double your speed. If you can maintain the same cadence (speed of wheel) while increasing your resistance then you are really increasing output and that is GREAT. Go with the beat, tempo and feeling of the music and speed up or slow down as the music does. Have fun with it and work hard.
