Armor is not a topic I usually cover (perhaps I should). but there are definitely some misconceptions to address.
Gauntlets are not armored on the inside and cannot be. They are also more restrictive than people typically seem to think. The more articulated types of Medieval and Renaissance gauntlets offer decent flexibility but they still limit the movement of the wrist and fingers. It's hard to appreciate the effect if you have never worn steel gauntlets.
The historical fighting manuals usually either deal with unarmored combat or use techniques that don't require fine motor skills, like half-swording.
