Gossip in a Country Like Lanka

  • Gossip is a popular past time in Lanka, especially in rural areas. The word gossip originated from the Yiddish language word "goy", which meant gossip. This word spread into Sri Lanka when Dutch colonizers settled there. Gossip is considered as an enjoyable pastime in rural areas in the past. But in modern times, as gossip is considered as unhygienic and vulgar, it is not discussed in polite conversations in any place where one may entertain other than his or her home.

As its popularity grew, it was soon launched as a gossip lanka news blog, as many gossip sites did before then. However, this has changed the way gossip is discussed and viewed in recent times. It has been widely reported that majority of the country's population uses social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter to stay in touch with friends and loved ones. Most people do not consider gossiping as inappropriate; however, the law against it is very strong and those who spread such rumors can be arrested.

However, the law against gossiping does not mean that the press is required to do investigative journalism on any case regarding gossip. As a matter of fact, these days, any type of news that is circulated by word of mouth is considered a matter of public interest. Therefore, any case of gossip that concerns public figures, celebrities and other respected public figures are all the more newsworthy. The media cannot, under any circumstances, become a free press.

Gossip about public figures is a part of American culture in the 21st century. In fact, many Americans consider it normal to gossip about other Americans. Some Americans regard it as a part of social life. The truth about gossiping is that it is only gossip if the gossip spreads like wildfire. For example, a person who gossips about another person, who happens to be a public figure, can be charged with criminal contempt or could be sued for libel if such gossip continues.

The first person to challenge the right of gossip in a free society is the celebrity. A celebrity can challenge the right of gossip by filing a lawsuit for libel. The first law on gossip was declared in 18aha. However, the Supreme Court has ruled that the right of every individual to sue another individual for damages over gossip is not a human right. According to the law, the gossip is protected speech and does not infringe on the right of privacy. Therefore, if a celebrity becomes the subject of gossip, he can sue for damages.

However, the fact that celebrities have the upper hand in this situation makes it all the more important for the general news readers and journalists to remain vigilant. When people start gossiping about public figures, they violate the privilege of free speech. Therefore, we should always be careful about what we say about our favorite celebrities. We can take help from blogs and news forums to know more about what the gossip says about the public figures. When news agencies do get hold of gossip and report on them, they must take care not to jeopardize the reputation of the person in the gossip.

It has been observed that most of the celebrities get into the gossip before giving any interviews to media organizations. This is done to hide the fact that they are actually busy with their personal lives. Therefore, news reporters and correspondents need to be extremely vigilant when they come across rumors about the celebrities. They must not publish any false information on the web without checking the facts. They must take immediate action and stop spreading the gossip. If a news story is not verified by multiple sources, it should not be published.

Public figures are certainly trying to remain away from the gossip mails but they cannot escape the fact that in today's world, it is easy to spread rumors. For example, a celebrity may be meeting someone new. A rumor starts that they are having an affair with the person and that they will be marrying each other soon. These gossip mails can damage the reputation of the celebrities and news agencies must not publish them. This will ensure that the gossip will not spread further and damage the public image of the celebrities.
