Another accommodation tip: if you want to save even more, check out hotels in Monterey. This city is larger than Carmel, but correspondingly more noisy. There are also good beaches, many cafes and restaurants, as well as a local museum, which often hosts interesting exhibitions. For example, last year we got there for an exhibition of works by Pablo Picasso.
Immediately after leaving Carmel, landscapes of incredible beauty await you: an endless ocean, light sand, greenery and hills that turn into rocks in places. Along the road there are several large parks with access to the ocean and camping sites, so, as an option, you can also stay here for the night and save on a hotel (although you will need to stock up on water and something edible).
A 20 minute drive from Carmel, be sure to stop to take pictures of the Bixby Bridge. In general, along the entire road there will be a huge number of special places for exiting the highway, so there is always the opportunity to stop and admire the beauty of this coast.
We chose the city of Cambria as the next place to spend the night. It should be noted that if you decide to follow this route, it is worth checking in advance for information about landslides along the road. In 2017, there was a rather serious collapse that blocked the road, and repairs are still underway at this place. The last point before the road closure (as of June 2018) is Whale Watchers Café. There are two options for avoiding the collapse site:
• immediately after Carmel, take the direction to the city of Cumbria (this is a faster option, but in this case you will miss almost 1.5 hours of driving along the beautiful Pacific coast - you will have to go along the usual route far from the ocean).
• drive along the coast to the adjoining small road Nacimiento and continue along it. It will be a little longer than if you choose the first option, but, for example, we decided to continue along Nacimiento and never regretted it. Firstly, you won't miss a large stretch of scenic coastline, and secondly, the Nacimiento road is also quite entertaining. It passes through mountains of sand and a military base. When going uphill, the traffic is very slow, and of course, a little scary from the height, but you get incredible views of the coast. Further you will find yourself in the forest, and later the area will resemble the savannah. In the end, this road will take you to Highway 101 (Highway 101 South), from where you can get to Cumbria (in general, in about 2.5 hours).
Cumbria has a very large selection of hotels and they are all very similar to each other. This time we stayed at the Fogcatcher Inn . The advantage of this hotel (as well as many others near it) is its location - across the road from the ocean. If your room is closer to the road (which, due to the collapse, is not very busy), then you will fall asleep and wake up to the sound of the ocean. Of the pleasant pluses - a fireplace in the room. At night, it is quite cool from across the ocean, and the fireplace helps not only to warm up, but also creates a pleasant atmosphere - a feeling of home comfort and warmth.
