Get 10 Lives:

At the Controls screen hit Select, a new menu should appear.
Go into that menu, highlight Lives.
To change your amount keep pressing X.

Press Select at the controls menu. Another option will appear.
Enter the new menu, highlight the "Lives" option, then press X
to increase the number of starting lives.
