5. DIY Beauty Treatment
Many people do this but former South Korean model Hang Mioku is probably the "best" example of DIY plastic surgery gone wrong. She resorted to a dangerous DIY beauty treatment when doctors refused to give her any more silicone injections. She resorted to injecting cooking oil and black market silicone into her face. Despite surgeries to remove more than 60 grams of silicone, oil and other foreign substances from her face, Mioku is permanently scarred and disfigured.
4. Lip Plates
Lip plates have been a custom for some African tribes for thousands of years. Increasingly large disks made from wood or clay are placed into a pierced hole in the upper or lower lip, thereby stretching it. The women of the Mursi tribe in Ethiopia take great pride in making their own plates, being seen as a symbol of strength. Over time the diameter of the plate can range from 8cm to 20cm.
3. Neck Ring
In this case an elongated neck is what makes someone beautiful. Most notably practiced by the Kayan people of Southeast Asia, girls as young as five begin to wear coils around their neck. The length of the coil is gradually increased over time. While this creates the illusion of an elongated neck, the weight of the coils deforms the clavicle and puts significant pressure on the ribs.

An American mother gave her daughter a pill filled with tapeworm eggs to help her lose weight quickly. The unnamed mother thought she was doing best for her child because there was a beauty pageant in a couple of weeks and she wanted her to look her best. The girl was admitted to a Florida hospital in excruciating pain and she was featured in an episode of the medical documentary Untold Stories of the ER.
